These longer and warmer Spring days are getting me pumped for drinking smoothies again! Although, the rain this weekend has me feeling a little discouraged. I usually take a smoothie-hiatus during the Fall and Winter because I’m more in the mood for something warm. Do you feel the same? But, now that it’s Spring I’m busting out my Vitamix and sharing my top 3 favorite Spring smoothie combinations!
When it comes to smoothies, I shoot for 3 main components – fat, fiber and veggies. I also keep the amount of fruit to no more than 1 cup. Anymore than this and I get a bloated belly and an energy crash 1 hour later. I always keep a few high-fiber options around to add to smoothies.
My Favorite Smoothie Fiber Additions:
*Ground Flax Seeds
As you can tell, I like a lot of seeds. 😀 But for good reason! Seeds are packed with fiber, healthy fats, and minerals, such as magnesium and manganese. Magnesium is necessary for helping form healthy bones, supporting exercise performance, and fighting inflammation. Manganese is important for blood sugar control, as well as fighting inflammation. The fiber and fats in seeds also helps keep you full and satisfied from breakfast until lunch. Eat up!
Do I Need an Expensive Blender?
The short answer is NO, especially when blending the Blueberry Power and Strawberry Basil Smoothies. These flavors are less fibrous, meaning there’s less bulk for the blender to ‘blend.’ BUT, if you want to make the Garden Greens smoothie, or blend fibrous veggies like kale and carrots on a regular basis, I highly recommend getting a fancy smancy blender. You’re going to want the power that these blenders offer so that you’re not chewing your smoothie!
I saved up my pennies as a hostess back in college to buy myself a Vitamix. Best investment ever! That baby is still blending strong and I use it for much more than smoothies, such as these Whole Grain Blender Pancakes, Creamy Cauliflower Alfredo or Smokey Butternut Squash Pasta.
Okay, are you ready to make some Spring smoothies? Rev up them blenders!
3 Spring Smoothies
1. Blueberry Power
1 cup milk of choice
3 ice cubes
1/2 cup blueberries (I used frozen)
A big handful of spinach
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (this one is my fav!)
1 tablespoon chia seeds
Dash of cinnamon
This has been my go-to breakfast lately, although I usually add a spoonful of almond butter. It is thick, creamy, and packed with ‘powerful’ ingredients to give you energy throughout your morning. Blueberries and spinach provide fiber and potent antioxidants. Chia seeds provide fiber and healthy fats. And, the protein powder provides amino acids to help recover my muscles after my morning workout and keep me full for a few hours! If you find you’re still hungry after drinking this, add a spoonful of nut butter.
2. Strawberry Basil
1 cup milk of choice
3 ice cubes
4 large strawberries
2 basil leaves
1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder (this one is my fav!)
1 tablespoon hemp seeds
This is by far the ‘prettiest’ Spring smoothie I’ve made. It looks like strawberry milk, and tastes like a strawberry milkshake…with a hint of basil! 😀 This smoothie embodies some of my favorite parts of Spring. The pastel color, the ripe berries, and basil. Lots and lots of basil.
3. Garden Greens
1 cup water
3 ice cubes
1 handful of kale (discard the stems)
1/2 large carrot
1/4 lemon (discard the peel)
A few sprigs of parsley
Dime size of fresh ginger
1-2 scoops collagen powder (this one is my fav!)
You can see why this one is named, “Garden Greens.” It’s very green and it encompasses many garden veggies, but don’t let the veggies scare you away. You’ll be surprised at how refreshing this smoothie is. My hubby was completely shocked when I told him there’s no fruit in this smoothie (not counting the avocado) because it has a natural sweetness from the carrot and lemon.
